[...] Journalists are being required more and more to interact with the web as part of their job, and that is a very daunting fact. Math is hard, but HTML is a completely new language. I thought that speaking English and being able to hold my own in Spanish were more than enough to fill my language quota, but once again I was wrong. [...]

[...] However, do not think you are entitled to a job because you once wrote for your student newspaper. These days everyone writes at least once for their student newspaper so they can pack their CV full of empty experiences that look good but mean nothing. Perhaps try learning some basic programming, such as html, css etc. With the rise of online journalism this may become a necessity. [...]

Danny Sanchez, who is now working as a web producer at the Orlando Sentinel, returned to UF recently to give a class talk and he shared this advice, collected from his blog readers.
When folks send me their resumes, I often feel bad for those who think they have two years experience working at a major news Web site. But really they have two years experience pasting photos into a gallery and writing cutlines.

If that’s your job, learn on your own how to do something more complicated. Learn a programming language. Teach yourself something. Try Flash. Anything.

But don’t tout yourself as an “expert” at cutting and pasting photos or stories into a content management system.

[...] Professor McAdams blogged this morning about a post on Journalistopia. The post is from a recent UF grad, Danny Sanchez, who is working in the online department at the Orlando Sentinel. Through his blog, Sanchez asked journalists to share the advice they would give to aspiring young journalists. The post is about what he was told. You should read it. Heck, you should memorize it: http://journalistopia.com/2006/10/25/advice-for-young-journalists/”. [...]

This is all great advice. At the core, it is still about the journalism. But the other side of this is the ability to have a multimedia mindset. This means been able to think about which is the best way to tell a story in a way that works for your audience. Multimedia tools are just that - tools. What makes the difference is how we use them to improve and better our journalism.

If you don't have fire in the belly about injustice and corruption, then get some. Go find a story topic that makes it possible for you to experience outrage about pollution's effect on the poor who live next to a dump or downwind of toxins, or about racial or gender or disability or regional discrimination. Then make that story a serious project that not only results in immediate stories, but also a lifelong interest that never burns out. That fire will sustain you when covering county supervisor meetings or other mind numbing but important topics. Journalism isn't always "fun" or "exciting" as I hear so many people claim. But someone has to do it, and if you dare to wade into these danger-filled waters then make it worthwhile for you and your readers. You might just accomplish something that way.
